New road safety legislation introduced into Parliament this week will see licences immediately stripped from drivers caught driving at excessive speeds.
Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Lisa Neville introduced the Road Safety and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2019 into Parliament as part of a Government crack down on dangerous drivers.
“Our new laws mean those charged with driving at an excessive speed or using a vehicle as a weapon for other offences will be immediately removed from our roads – including hit and runs – as they should be,” Ms Neville said
“Under the proposed reforms, motorists caught travelling 45 km/hr or more over the speed limit, or 145 km/hr or more in a 110 km/h zone, will have their licence stripped as soon as they’re caught,” she said.
“The same will apply to anyone charged with murder, attempted murder, gross violence offences and causing serious injury offences if they used a motor vehicle to commission the offence.”
Ms Neville said dangerous driving was a major threat to community safety and the reforms reflected the expectations of Victorians that people charged with committing serious driving offences would be removed from the roads.
She said the Bill would also ensure that a person who committed a ‘serious motor vehicle offence’, while under the influence of alcohol, or alcohol and a drug, at the time of offence would be subject to mandatory licence sanctions.
