A senior official at the Kenya Rural Roads Authority has been found to have Sh567.63 million ($A7 million) stashed in 22 bank accounts.
He also owned 27 properties and had shares in multiple companies and schools.
The official had been unable to explain his vast wealth, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) said.
The EACC said Benson Muteti Musila could not have built that amount of wealth from his monthly salary of Sh390,000 ($A4,874) as a Regional Manager and argued that he was a beneficiary of kickbacks from road contractors.
Mr Muteti is accused of getting kickbacks and of awarding State tenders to a company associated with his brother.
The Public Servant amassed the wealth between February 2009 and December 2018 where his pay, according to court documents, would have totalled to Sh136 million ($A1.7 million) for the 119 months.
Anti-Corruption Court Judge, Mumbi Ngugi last year dismissed Mr Musila’s petition to freeze a probe of the properties and allowed the EACC to investigate the source of his wealth.
Justice Ngugi said it was in the public interest that investigative bodies were allowed to carry out their mandates without interference, adding that there must be very clear and cogent reasons for the court to interfere with the exercise of their powers.
She added that Mr Musila had failed to demonstrate a violation of his rights by the EACC’s detectives.
Mr Musila has maintained that the money in the banks was meant to pay staff and finance general office administration.
As for the shares and properties, he claimed to be a careful investor.
According to filings in court, he and his wife run a hardware store in in Nairobi, while their son runs a construction firm.
