IP Australia makes service history

Australia’s position as a world leader in intellectual property services has been confirmed with a local company completing a transaction using a new application programming interface (API) developed by IP Australia.

Announcing the breakthrough, the Director General of Intellectual Property Australia, Michael Schwager (pictured) said it was an exciting milestone in IP Australia’s ambitious plan to transform intellectual property service delivery and create greater connectiveness for Australian innovators and business.

“Griffith Hack (part of IPH Limited) was the first IP Australia customer to transact using the new APIs, successfully renewing a patent for technology that reduces greenhouse gas emissions of coal-fired power plants,” Mr Schwager said.

He said Griffith Hack was a leading innovator and had been one of IPA’s most engaged customers. He said its feedback had been critical to shaping the direction of the Agency’s digital services build.

“This lowers the barrier-to-entry for small to medium enterprises in the industry and drives better outcomes for individuals and businesses managing their intellectual property,” Mr Schwager said.

“Our delivery team has held over 45 workshops with customers and stakeholders ranging from innovative start-ups to established market leaders, as part of an ongoing focus to understand needs, and building solutions that meet these needs.”

He said IP Australia was using leading technologies and approaches to deliver the solution, including Amazon Web Service cloud computing technology for faster delivery and improved reliability; MuleSoft API technology to iteratively develop complex APIs, and Microservices architecture, automated testing and continuous delivery to enable agile and iterative delivery of benefits.
