City Services is calling for community input on a range of projects to make it easier, convenient and more accessible for Canberrans to move in and around their suburbs.
Issuing the call, the Directorate said age friendly improvements were on the way for the suburbs of Reid, Chifley, Scullin and O’Connor as part of the Territory’s Age Friendly Suburbs Program.
“In 1950, Canberra was home to fewer than 20,000 people, and now the city is preparing for a population of more than 500,000 by 2030,” City Services said.
“According to 2021 Census data, 13.8 per cent of Canberrans are aged 65 years and over,” it said.
“This is about 60,000 people – and this number will continue to grow.
“The Age Friendly Suburbs Program aims to create opportunities for a healthier and more active lifestyle among older residents and those with mobility needs.”
City Services has launched four surveys so Canberrans can help select areas in need of pathway improvements, including where paths could be made wider; trip hazard removal or repairs to the path; improved road crossings; and additional seating and lighting.
“Improvements have been identified through community path requests including Fix My Street data and suburb-wide desktop and on-the-ground analysis,” the Directorate said.
“Following engagement with targeted stakeholders including community and resident associations in each suburb, we are now inviting the broader community to provide their feedback on the improvements proposed in their suburb and to let us know if there are any other improvements we should consider to improve accessibility.”
It said the four surveys for Reid, Chifley, Scullin and O’Connor were open until 23 November.
