The Department of Finance has declared that its report on the second year of the Aboriginal Procurement Policy reveals the program has been a strong success.

Commencing the policy on 1 July 2018, the program has achieved progressive targets for awarding contracts to Aboriginal businesses.

According to the Department Agencies are currently required to award a minimum of two per cent of contracts to Aboriginal businesses.

In a statement, it said the policy was realising its aim of improving the economic prosperity of Aboriginal businesses, their suppliers, sub-contractors and the broader Aboriginal community.

“Over $172 million in contracts were awarded to 104 Aboriginal businesses across Western Australia, including 143 contracts awarded in regional locations,” the Department said.

“The policy is continuing to successfully support the economic and business development of regional communities.”

It said it administered the policy with its implementation supported by two Aboriginal Business Expos and a Capability Building Program.

“These initiatives showcase Aboriginal businesses and their available services, and facilitate connections between Government Agencies and the Aboriginal business sector,” the Department said.

“During the 2020-21 financial year, the policy’s third year, the target for the awarding of contracts to Aboriginal businesses will increase to three per cent.”

The Department said it would continue to support the Aboriginal business sector and advise Agencies on how to implement the policy to meet the increased target.
