The Department of Communications and the Arts marked last week’s National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) week by posting a YouTube video of two Indigenous staff members answering questions about their culture.
Taking inspiration from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation series, You Can’t Ask That, Feoina Kelly and Liam Tucker (both pictured) spoke about what it meant to be Indigenous, the importance of NAIDOC Week and staying connected to culture.
“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have such great connection to kinship and family ties and a deadly connection to country,” Mr Tucker said.
Ms Kelly said NAIDOC Week was a celebration that put Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture front and centre and brought Australians together to celebrate their culture.
The Department said the artwork shown in the background of the video was Connecting for Reconciliation by Bradley Kickett, commissioned by the Department as part of its Reconciliation Action Plan.
In an accompanying statement, the Department said it was an inclusive employer, committed to workplace diversity.
“Our Diversity and Inclusion Strategy outlines our plan for the attraction, development and retention of a diverse workforce,” it said.
“Our staff are supported by a range of networks that reflect our workforce’s diversity.
“This includes our Indigenous Staff Network, Gender Equality Network, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Network, Pride and Allies Network, and Disability and Allies Network.”
