An exhibition of artworks by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders involved with ACT Corrections and the Alexander Maconochie Centre has been opened in Narrabundah in the lead-up to NAIDOC Week.

The exhibition celebrates the histories, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and is based on this year’s theme, “Because of Her, We Can!”

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Rachel Stephen-Smith said this year’s NAIDOC theme honoured the incredible work of women whose passion, resilience and strength had not only empowered past generations, but also paved the way for generations to come.

“The annual art exhibition is an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander detainees and Community Corrections clients to connect with culture through art,” Ms Stephen-Smith said.

“We know that creating meaningful art can be an important part of the healing process for a lot of people who are engaged in the justice system.”

She said most of the works would be on sale to the public, with proceeds going towards supporting the artists’ rehabilitation and assisting them to reintegrate into the community.

The exhibition is at the Community Services #1 Gallery, 63 Boolimba Crescent, Narrabundah, and is open Monday to Saturday throughout July.
