The latest cultural grants to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to celebrate, strengthen and promote their cultural heritage have been announced.
Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Rachel Stephen-Smith said the aim of the grant program was to provide funding support for individuals and organisations to develop innovative projects and initiatives that promoted the understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and culture in Canberra.
“The six grants awarded in this round include Ngunnawal education kits; a Wiradjuri language counting book; a Connect Community to Culture and Country project; a Strong Families Through Strong Culture project at the Alexander Maconochie Centre; a Netball Reconciliation Round; and an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Showcase at the National Multicultural Festival,” Ms Stephen-Smith said.
“It’s really exciting to see so many unique ideas and projects from Canberrans and local community organisations.”
She said the grants celebrated and promoted Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture in the community and she was pleased so many people would benefit from the projects.
She said a second round of cultural grants had opened, specifically for culturally significant events occurring between May and July.
These events included National Sorry Day, the Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, National Reconciliation Week, Mabo Day, and NAIDOC week.
