The Minister for Indigenous Australians has announced a review of the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (CATSI Act) to ensure it is still fit for purpose.

The Minister, Ken Wyatt said the Act was an important underpin for many Indigenous organisations and the review was an important measure to ensure it was working well.

“This review will examine how [the Act] is working and what more the Government can be doing to help these corporations thrive,” Mr Wyatt said.

He said since its inception the top 500 corporations registered under the Act had more than doubled their overall income.

“Following consultations and a technical review in 2018, it is clear that the CATSI Act would benefit from a comprehensive review, which includes an examination of the Act as a special measure under the Racial Discrimination Act 1975,” Mr Wyatt said.

The Registrar of Indigenous Corporations, Selwyn Button has welcomed the review.

“After more than 12 years of operation, this is an opportunity to build on our legacy to create a solid foundation for the future” Mr Button said.

“This review will allow the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations to help organisations streamline their operations so they can increase their effectiveness while maintaining good governance, delivering surety and transparency for their members.”

The review will be led by the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) and it is expected to be completed by 30 November 2020.

The NIAA is seeking feedback before 14 February and more information can be accessed at this PS News link.
