The Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi has announced that its much heralded, but long-delayed ‘Home Delivery of Public Services’ is finally under way.
The project aims to deliver 40 public services at the doorstep of those who request it.
Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia (pictured) first announced that the scheme would be rolled out in November last year.
At the time he said that services including applications for driving licences or new water connections could be completed without citizens making journeys to Government offices and waiting in line.
Mr Sisodia said a private agency would be hired to run the service.
However, a tussle broke out between the Territory Government and Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, Anil Baijal who has the final say on legislation governing the Territory.
Mr Baijal rejected the initial legislation saying it was impractical.
Revisions were made and the project is now being launched in phases with services from seven Government Departments at a nominal charge.
Upon request, Government representatives will visit the applicant’s residence, gather the required details and necessary documents for a nominal fee. They will be equipped with machines such as biometric devices and a camera.
The Government claims that its doorstep delivery scheme is a first of its kind in the world and is a “revolution in governance”.
