DevelopmentWA has said that now the demolition of the former Challenger TAFE site in Beaconsfield was nearing completion, it has opened public consultation to help guide its future development.

In a statement, DevelopmentWA said the TAFE’s demolition was an important step in making land available for a modern mixed-use development, aimed at revitalising the Beaconsfield area.

“It is expected the new development on the 3.8 hectare site will include a range of affordable and social housing options, as well as community facilities, public open spaces and commercial premises such as restaurants and cafes,” the Agency said.

“The outcomes of this first phase of consultation will help guide the development of a concept design and the preparation of the local structure plan,” it said.

“These documents set out the way the land is to be used and developed.”

DevelopmentWA said it had begun preliminary planning for the redevelopment of the site, including an application to rezone the site to ‘urban’ under the Metropolitan Region Scheme, and was working closely with the City of Fremantle and the Department of Communities.

Minister for Lands, John Carey said the redevelopment was about boosting social and affordable housing across Western Australia.

“This site has the potential to breathe new life into the Beaconsfield area, and I encourage local residents to get involved in the community consultation and have their say on the redevelopment,” Mr Carey said.

“It’s important we consult with, and bring the local community and relevant stakeholders along, during the redevelopment.”

The community and stakeholders can have their say on the future of the site at this PS News link.

The community consultation will run until 28 October.
