Icon Water and OzHarvest have signed a new three year partnership to provide a food service to people in need.

Managing Director of Icon Water, John Knox (pictured right) said the utility was pleased to be supporting OzHarvest in its valuable community work.

“Not only is water essential to human life, it is critical to food production,” Mr Knox said.

“OzHarvest is redirecting food to those who need it and in turn reducing the wastage of both food and water,” he said.

Mr Knox noted that the partnership was signed on World Food Day, celebrated each year on 16 October to promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffered from hunger, and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all.

ACT Manager for OzHarvest, Dave Barnet (pictured left) said that without water there would be no food.

“For instance throwing away one burger wastes the same amount of water as a 90-minute shower,” Mr Barnet said.

“We are pleased that Icon Water shares our desire to help the community.”

He said OzHarvest was Australia’s leading food rescue organisation, collecting quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivering it directly to more than 1,300 charities supporting people in need across the country.

In the ACT, OzHarvest typically rescues between 9,000 and 10,000 kilograms of great produce and non-perishable food every week.

Icon Water will provide OzHarvest with $18,000 per year for the next three years to support its community work.
