A speech in the Netherlands by South Australia’s Premier Peter Malinauskas has explained to the world how its first Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act will streamline processes and build on South Australia’s global leadership in decarbonisation.
Supported by the Department for Energy and Mining, the new Act is to streamline processes for companies wanting to invest in large-scale hydrogen and renewable energy projects into a single regulatory process covering the entire project lifecycle.
The Department said the Act would also facilitate secure land access, social and environmental benefits and put First Nations people at the centre of the transformation, in line with leading environmental, social and governance requirements.
“South Australia is a global leader in the transition to renewable energy, and in just over 15 years, we have shifted our energy source from 1 per cent to around 70 per cent renewable energy and are powering towards a target of 100 per cent by 2030,” the Department said.
“With our abundant renewable resources, South Australia is well-positioned to capitalise on the local and international shift towards clean, renewable fuel sources,” it said.
“Based on feedback from a previous consultation regarding the Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act Issues Paper, a draft Bill for the Act has been developed and is now open for consultation.”
The Department said it invited the community to become involved in the Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Actby responding to the YourSAy Survey.
It said all feedback would be considered and used to inform a Bill that would be introduced to Parliament later in 2023.
The Survey will close on 26 June.
