The Community Services Directorate’s Public Housing Renewal Program has reached a major milestone with the 1,000 th public housing dwelling coming on line this week.
The occasion was marked with keys to 12 apartments and 18 townhouses handed over in Monash.
Minister for Housing and Suburban Development, Yvette Berry said the Government was replacing 1,288 of the Territory’s oldest and most concentrated public housing dwellings.
“This renewal will see modern, energy-efficient homes that suit contemporary lifestyle needs — as well as achieving a good social mix,” Ms Berry said.
She said the program was making a real difference to the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the community.
“Delivering these latest 30 new homes further strengthens the Government’s commitment to urban renewal and improving social outcomes for public housing tenants in Canberra.”
She said the 1,288 dwellings represented approximately 10 per cent of Canberra’s public housing portfolio with the program on track to deliver the remaining properties by mid-2019.
The remaining dwellings were nearing completion in Gungahlin, Mawson, Wright, Holder, Taylor and Chapman.
Ms Berry said an allocation of $100 million had been made to provide 200 new dwellings over five years and enable the renewal of a further 1,000 dwellings.
“The program has also been recognised for its innovation in delivering quality adaptable homes, having won the Social Infrastructure category at the Urban Development Institute of Australia NSW Awards for Excellence in 2018,” Ms Berry said.
