Holiday campers urged to bring it all

Queenslanders who plan to camp during the school holidays are being encouraged to ensure they have the necessary gear, as well as booking and permit requirements.

Ranger with the Department of Environment and Science, Jolene McLellan said she wanted to ensure everyone enjoyed a great camping experience, but there was a checklist people needed to go through first.

“First and foremost, do you have a booking at one of our campgrounds? A booking is essential prior to leaving home,” Ms McLellan said.

“We’re also urging campers to ensure they have the correct vehicle access authority before leaving home — bookings and permits are essential otherwise you won’t be able to pitch your tent.”

She said it was also important to know what facilities were available at the chosen destination, such as toilets and showers.

“In some cases, you may need to take a portable toilet with you. Also, at the end of your holiday, make sure your campsite is clean and take your rubbish with you,” Ms McLellan said.

“Don’t forget a torch with spare batteries, plenty of food and water, a well-stocked first aid kit, and a battery-powered radio.”

She said it was also important to let someone know of your plans: “particularly if you’re heading to a remote camping spot — and check in regularly”.

Instructions on how to obtain the necessary permits to visit the areas can be accessed on the Department’s website at this PS News link.
