The Education Directorate has published a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) to help parents, carers and students manage learning from home as public schools transitioned to remote learning last Friday (20 August).
The Directorate said teachers spent their first week in lockdown preparing for the change by recording videos, building timetables, organising resources and getting Chromebooks ready for their students.
“Remote learning will look different for each school year and between schools, just like on-site programs vary between schools,” the Directorate said.
“However, all public schools will have a common approach for remote learning,” it said.
“Learning schedules will offer some flexibility, so that parents can manage their work and caring responsibilities.”
The Directorate said for Preschool to Year 2 students, learning resources would be provided in hardcopy packs and supplemented via email, SeeSaw or Google Classroom; students in the later years of primary school would receive more structured learning on Google Classroom, with time for physical and creative activities; and high school and college students could expect direct teaching through Google Meets, with independent time to complete tasks.
It said primary and high school teachers would check in with their students every day, to guide learning and to monitor everyone’s wellbeing.
“Just like a school day, it’s important that your child attends check-ins and that you notify your teacher if they won’t be present for a day,” the Directorate said.
