Heavy Headings

Start the conversation

One doesn’t have to look very far into the public sector these days to find the creative, clever and canny work of headline artists attempting to attract attention for their cunningly created introductions to official news releases.

And the past week has been no exception!

Leading the way was ACT’s Public Service announcing that the Canberra airport had offered to throw open one of its not-so-busy rooms to be used by the community for COVID vaccinations.

The wise, wary and well-informed headline heavies went straight for the readers’ raillery reception, humdrumingly wording the introduction: ‘Canberra Airport precinct COVID-19 mass vaccination clinic ready for take-off”.

Such humour!

Rising to the challenge, the headline honchoes at the Queensland Public Service also saw value in a happy headline announcing that an official grants program had been developed so the State could become the ‘aquaculture capital of the world’ by convincing its prawn farmers to ‘go digital’.

Keen to be seen by the multi-merry media, the heavy headies came up with a headline that just skinned the ACT’s airport take-off.

“A-peeling grant backs prawn farmers to go digital” was the Queenslanders’ contender.

One could say the effort came with its own special ‘a-peel’!

From fib to tib

To something different now from PS-sssst’s medicine for mental health in which the blithely brilliant Philomena S from the Victorian Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, prescribes the cure-alls to cure all – some fun and humour in the so often un-fun and humour-less workplace as we attempt to keep the country campestral and clever.

“I have finally discovered why humans have shin bones,” the ever clever Philomena would have said if she had spoken to PS-sssst!.

“And….?” queried querulous PS-sssst!

“They’re a device for finding furniture in a dark room” was the Philomenic response.

Is there anyone who could argue she’s not right? We didn’t think so!

The winning way

To Rama’s weekly giveaway now in which one lucky reader will become the proud new owner of a DVD copy of the 2020 Australian science fiction film, Occupation: Rainfall starring Dan Ewing, Lawrence Makoare and Temuera Morrison.

To win the well-won film, all we needed to do was tell Rama who played the character of Amelia Chambers in the film, the answer to which was ‘Jet Tranter’.

And while the drums roll, PS-sssst! can reveal that the most successful correct reader to have their entry drawn from the PS news Barrel of Booty was Suzanna A from the Australian Border Force.

Congratulations Suzanna and thanks to everyone who took part in Rama’s contest.

The prize will be meeting its new owner very soon

For another chance to add one of Rama’s giveaway gifts simply visit one or both of her present giveaways of this Book Getting It All Done (HBR Working Parents Series) at this PS News link and/or her other DVD offering Windrider at this link.

The very best of luck to everyone who does.

Scamps’ camps

And then there was the Seas Scouts camp that set up on the beach so close to the water that the porpoises could be seen swimming in to shore around dinner time every day.

The scouts had great fun throwing the scraps from their meals to the porpoises while the cook catered on the seaside with everyone enjoying the interaction with nature and learning first hand the wildness of wild nature.

But it was the cook who took the prize for summarising the action.

“It’s tucker time,” he’d call out in the lead up to each dinner: “for all in tents and porpoises!”

Apologies to anyone eating at the moment!

Till next week…..
