Transport Canberra has adopted DonateLife Week (25 July to 1 August) once again this year, getting behind the Week’s 10th anniversary and promising to make it “extra special”.
A spokesperson for Transport Canberra said the Directorate had supported the cause for the past three years.
The spokesperson said DonateLife Week was the Australian Government’s key public awareness initiative to encourage people to register as organ and tissue donors and to tell their loved ones once they had signed up.
“This year DonateLife will be running The Great Registration Race, with the goal to encourage up to 100,000 more Australians to join the Australian Organ Donor Register,” the spokesperson said.
“In 2020 there was a 16 per cent decrease in the number of organ donors and a 12 per cent decrease in the number of people receiving a transplant compared to 2019,” they said.
“There was also a 16 per cent drop in registrations in 2020.”
The spokesperson called on Canberrans to help “turn that bus around”.
“Registering is easy and only takes one minute,” they said.
The spokesperson said Transport Canberra and Canberra Metro Operations (CMET) staff would be wearing DonateLife hats as a reminder to the Canberra community to join the registration race and support DonateLife Week 2021.
