NSW Health is strongly encouraging members of the public to wear masks when unable to physically distance.
NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said masks were recommended, particularly in indoor settings such as on public transport and places where people congregated, such as entertainment venues and services at places of worship.
“They also offer protection if worn by staff in hospitality venues such as pubs, clubs and restaurants,” Dr Chant said.
“By wearing a mask, you are protecting other people,” she said.
“If you are unknowingly infected, wearing a mask will reduce the chance that you pass the virus on to others.”
Dr Chant said physical distancing was still one of the most important things people could do to protect themselves.
“Try to avoid crowds, but where physical distance cannot be maintained, wearing a mask is an important protective measure for other people, along with good hand hygiene,” she said.
“Always stay home if you are sick, and get tested early.”
The Chief Health Officer said it was important that people used facemasks properly by washing or sanitising their hands before putting them on or taking them off; ensuring the mask covered their nose and mouth and fitted snugly; that they refrained from touching the front of the mask while wearing or removing it; and they ensure the mask didn’t hang around their neck or under their nose.
Dr Chant said people should not reuse single-use masks and should ensure reusable masks are washed and dry after use.
