The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) has released its Water Sharing Plan for the Great Artesian Basin for public exhibition and community feedback.

Assistant Executive Director at NSW DPIE, Vanessa O’Keefe invited the community to attend public consultation sessions on the draft plan.

“Great Artesian Basin groundwater users are invited to submit feedback on the draft plan online until the 30 March, and to also attend public consultation sessions next month in Moree, Lightning Ridge, Bourke and Coonamble,” Ms O’Keefe said.

“Over the past few years, additional data has been collected to allow us to update the way that water is managed in the Great Artesian Basin,” she said.

“This plan will improve environmental and community outcomes for the area.”

Ms O’Keefe said the draft plan would replace the current NSW Great Artesian Basin Water Sharing Plan that expires on 1 July.

She said the draft plan applied to the groundwater resources of NSW’s Great Artesian Basin, referred to as the: Eastern Recharge Groundwater Source; Southern Recharge Groundwater Source; Surat Groundwater Source; Warrego Groundwater Source; and Central Groundwater Source.

The 79-page draft plan and details on the community consultation sessions can be accessed at this PS News link.
