Former Chief Executive of the Chief Minister’s Department, Mike Harris has been named as the new ACT Auditor-General.

Mr Harris (pictured) takes up his position on Friday (8 February) for his seven-year term.

He was previously Chair of the Board of Metro Tasmania and from 2017 the Independent Chair of the Review of the Tasmanian Fire Service Act.

An economist, Mr Harris’s previous ACT experience was Chief Executive of the Chief Minister’s Department from 2003 to 2009 after serving as Under Treasurer from 2002 to 2003.

In a statement announcing the appointment, the Speaker of the ACT Legislative Assembly, Joy Burch said the role of the Auditor-General was to conduct independent financial and performance audits of ACT Government Agencies and those entities in receipt of ACT Government funding or resources.

“The results of these audits are reported to the ACT Legislative Assembly and community,” Ms Burch said.

“These audits are an important means of holding Agencies and entities to account and encouraging them to continuously improve their services and activities.”

She said Mr Harris brought a wealth of experience in the private and public sectors to the position and she welcomed him to the role.

He replaces Maxine Cooper who completed her seven-year term in August.
