Green light for city-wide green bins

The roll-out of green waste bins across all Canberra suburbs has been brought forward to 1 April with registrations now open.

Minister for City Services, Chris Steel announced the new starting date, saying it had originally been planned for mid-year but was in response to strong community demand.

Expansion across the city follows trials in Tuggeranong and Weston Creek and a roll-out to Belconnen last September.

“The green waste bin service saves Canberrans time and money, providing high quality compost products for landscaping and reducing the number of trips needed to the green waste drop-off,” Mr Steel said.

He said the new service would help reduce the amount of organic waste going into landfill.

He said that with registrations now open, bin deliveries across the city would begin in March with collection services commencing in 1 April.

“Residents can opt-in for the service with a one-off $50 payment, or free for eligible concession card holders,” Mr Steel said.

He said the expansion was expected to lead to changes in the collection dates for existing service areas.

“More information on changes to the green waste bin collection calendar will be provided early in 2019.”

Mr Steel said that 40,384 residents of Belconnen, Tuggeranong and Weston Creek had registered for the bins by the end of November last year, representing approximately 45 per cent of households in those areas.
