Green Adelaide has launched a new series of online talks featuring experts on different approaches to the conservation of urban resources.
According to Green Adelaide, its seminars will run monthly throughout the year with the series entitled Towards cooler, greener wilder giving the community a chance to hear about vital environmental projects around metropolitan South Australia.
It said the first Towards cooler, greener, wilder event in the seminar series will be on Biodiversity Sensitive Urban Design (BSUD), followed by online sessions throughout the year.
It said the first will be an informative discussion with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology’s (RMIT) Professor Sarah Bekessy and Melbourne University’s Dr Georgia Garrard passing on how to apply BSUD in urban environments.
“Additionally, it will introduce BSUD and present local case studies of how BSUD is being implemented in practice across Adelaide to benefit both people and nature,” Green Adelaide said.
“This session is being held on 21 February at 4pm and will be recorded and made available on the Green Adelaide YouTube channel.”
It said BSUD was a design framework for cities, schools and homes that prioritises habitat for threatened species to improve biodiversity.
“It’s common for habitat loss in urban areas to be ‘offset’ by greening somewhere else,” it said.
“BSUD instead proposes ways to keep biodiversity in our neighbourhoods in several ways, like building and maintaining habitat using urban structures and sites.”
Green Adelaide said it began working with RMIT in October last year to build an evidence base for BSUD in Adelaide.
It said upcoming topics in the series will include: How restoring urban ecosystems improves our health; Looking after waterways; Cultural land management; Rewilding Adelaide; and many more.
