Six National Women’s Alliances are to receive funding over three years to engage with Australian women, understand their issues and experiences, and ensure their voices are part of the policy development process.

The Department of Premier and Cabinet’s Office for Women awarded the grants to Women’s Alliances that worked with diverse community groups and organisations to bring attention to the issues affecting Australian women.

“This advocacy also supports evidence-building for Government to address inequalities that disproportionately affect women and girls in our communities,” the Office said.

It said the specialist Alliances would collaborate with Government to inform policy and decision making on the priority issues of women’s safety; women’s economic security and leadership; women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women; women living in rural, regional and remote areas; and women with disability.

Minister for Women, Marise Payne said the Alliances had played an important role over the past 10 years to keep women’s voices at the forefront of policy solutions.

“The National Women’s Alliances are a valuable source of insight and advice to Government and they bring women’s perspectives to the forefront of policy development,” Senator Payne said.

She said the six successful specialist Women’s Alliances were, for women’s safety, YWCA Canberra – National Women’s Safety Alliance; for women’s economic security and leadership, YWCA Australia – Equality Rights Alliance; women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, Migration Council Australia – Harmony Alliance; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Alliance; women living in rural, regional and remote areas, National Rural Women’s Coalition; and for women with disability, Women with Disabilities (Australia).
