The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) has announced that the shortlist for its 2021 Golden Gecko Awards for Environmental Excellence includes projects focused on renewable energy, rehabilitation, recycling, education and training.

DMIRS said the projects spanned the State and demonstrated the resources sector’s commitment to striving for excellence.

Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Bill Johnston said the Awards were now in their 30th year and had attracted more than 60 projects demonstrating innovation, outstanding performance and positive environmental outcomes for the State.

“This means we are celebrating three decades of environmental excellence in our resources sector and the projects that have set new standards in the industry,” Mr Johnston said.

“By sharing these projects, the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety is encouraging other resources companies to continually improve and be at the forefront in community and environmental outcomes.”

He said the Awards recognised and advanced the $172 billion-sector’s innovation and technological capabilities, ensuring the State remained globally competitive and a leader in the resources sector.

Golden Gecko Award shortlisted applicants include: Flora Restorer — Revegetating a Diverse Ecosystem (Iluka Resources Limited); Agnew Hybrid Renewable Project (Gold Fields Australia and EDL); and Lake Kepwari: From Open-cut Coal Mine to Water Sports Landmark (Premier Coal).

Community Partnership Resources Sector Award shortlisted applicants include: Men in Sheds and Mitsui E&P Australia Deconstruction; and Dandjoo Darbalung Program — St Catherine’s College and IGO, AngloGold Ashanti, Sandfire Resources and Barminco.
