The Government owned business Green Industries SA (GISA) has launched new reports outlining circular economy opportunities across the two South Australian Regional Development Australia (RDA) in the Limestone Coast and the Murraylands and Riverland.
The reports were launched over a series of three events held in Mount Gambier, Murray Bridge and Berri, where attendees heard from GISA, the partner RDAs, and local business leaders.
According to the GISA, the reports were the first of their kind in Australia and were aimed at supporting South Australia’s transition to a circular economy.
“A circular economy unlocks more sustainable business opportunities and increases profit by keeping limited resources in circulation for as long as possible,” GISA said.
“Keeping resources in use reduces emissions and minimises our impact on our environment,” it said.
Chief Executive of Green Industries SA, Ian Overton said the study would equip local businesses and communities with the fastest pathways for sustainable development in the region.
“This report highlights unique opportunities for improved circularity that exist across agriculture and food and drink value chains in the Murraylands, Riverland and Limestone coast,” Professor Overton said.
“There is real opportunity to recapture the value of food loss at farms and at manufacturing sites that may otherwise be destined to become waste,” he said.
“I look forward to the next steps of building on our partnerships in the region, led by RDAMR and helping to unlock the circular economy opportunities identified in this report for a sustainable future, the GISA Chief Executive said.
