Giralang gets ‘go’ for shops at last

A Development Application (DA) for the rejuvenation of the long-neglected Giralang shopping centre has been welcomed by the community and local Assembly representatives.

MLA for Yerrabi, Suzanne Orr said the DA was a significant milestone for the project and brought the realisation of shops for the Giralang community one step closer.

“The developer undertook an extensive consultation process as required under the ACT Government’s new Pre-DA Community Consultation Guidelines, and I am pleased to see the community’s views have been incorporated into the development application,” Ms Orr said.

“The DA notification period provides a further opportunity for the community to have their say on the project before the independent Planning and Land Authority make their decision.”

She said the Giralang community had long been calling to be included in the discussion on this development, and she was thrilled to see the developer taking this important step.

“The development application also provides details for civil works including new off-site and on-street parking to Menkar Close that will benefit people who will use the shops and the Giralang Community Park,” Ms Orr said.

“I am also looking forward to the developer securing a supermarket tenant as part of the development process so the community has access to a quality supermarket within the suburb.”

The Development Application for the shopping centre can be accessed at this PS News link and comments and representations will be accepted until 18 May.
