GHANA
The head of Ghana’s Public Service, Nana Kwesi Agyekum-Dwamena (pictured) has attacked the work attitude of staff, whom he says are professionally competent, but lazy.
Mr Agyekum-Dwamena said the number of high-quality CVs for PS employees “would sink a ship”, but the attitude of many of them to their work was deplorable.
He said he was introducing stringent policies directed at reversing the trend, including mandated training programs that would show clearly how participants must develop their competency.
“I expect some resistance because for every change process there will be resistance, but I am determined to whip those people into line,” Mr Agyekum-Dwamena said.
In a related development, the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has condemned the growing practice of “special assistants” taking over the jobs of PS staff.
Chair of the Northern Region of CLOGSAG, Abdul Fatawu Dauda said PS employees were gradually losing their relevance due to the penetration of the special assistants.
Mr Dauda said special assistants had “virtually overshadowed” PS staff and were telling them how to do their jobs.
“We are fed up with what is happening with the rank and file,” Mr Dauda said.
“We have waited long enough, believing that the situation would improve … [but] we do not see any change.”
He called for a national campaign to oppose what he called changes by stealth.
