For the first time in 90 years the original Gerringong Police Station, converted into a stately private residence atop a hill overlooking the sea, has hit the market.
Sitting on an incredible 1474 sqm, about 150 metres from the town centre, 89 Fern Street, Gerringong served as the local police station from 1882 to 1933.
It has been in the loving hands of one family since, who meticulously renovated it to preserve its period features, yielding a home of both historical charm and modern comfort.
Selling agent Angie Ritchie of First National Real Estate Coast & Country says the home, constructed from locally sourced sandstone, bluestone and Australian red cedar, is a showpiece for Aussie craftsmanship of years gone by.
“This was a place built to last,” she says. “When standing in the property in one of the doorways you can see two layers of sandstone in the wall. I’d say it’s close to 50 cm thick in some places. That level of solid construction isn’t done anymore.”

Grand sandstone stairs lead to the front entrance, but after that, you’re presented with a single-level home, starting with a covered front veranda stretching the length of the house.
Currently used as a sitting and dining room, it offers spectacular views over Werri Beach, the headland, and surrounding mountains.
“It’s the perfect spot to sit and have a morning cuppa as you watch a spectacular sunrise,” Angie says.
Through the original Australian red cedar door, a wide hallway with high ceilings, hardwood floors and an elegant glass pendant offer your introduction to the home’s storied past.
Inside are three enormous bedrooms, each with its own fireplace, hardwood flooring, high, patterned ceilings and old-school sash windows.
“Each of them invites you to curl up in front of a roaring fire with a good book,” Angie says.

The yawning ceilings continue to the tastefully renovated kitchen, which features a large island bench, Caesarstone counters and quality integrated appliances.
The bathroom has also been updated and features a porcelain clawfoot bath beckoning you in for a deep soak.
The heart of the home is the living area, which was once the original exercise yard of the police station’s gaol. This space contains two original gaol cells, complete with iron doors and bars. More than an extraordinary hat tip to its history, these versatile spaces could be used as additional bedrooms, offices or studies.
Outside the property continues to sing, with multiple experiences offered across the vast, level block of land.
“In one corner, surrounded by beautiful old hedges, is a large deck that would make a wonderful outdoor entertaining area where you can host family and friends for long lunches,” Angie says.
“On a block this size of course there is plenty of space for kids and pets to run around, and space for an extra garage if you please.
“The property has had two DAs approved in the past. Though it is of ‘local council heritage significance’ meaning you cannot alter the facade, extension of the property is possible with council approval.”

Among the established gardens are lots of little surprises like a custom-built two-level cubbyhouse, original copper in the laundry, and a well.
The price guide on this home is $4 to $4.2 million.
“Behind is the local library and museum, and on one side is a vacant block, so not only is this a large block of elevated yet level land, it’s extremely private. At the same time the CBD is a few minutes away on foot. That combination is rare in itself,” Angie says.
“This combines with the home’s remarkable history, quality and aesthetic charm to make it a truly once-in-a-lifetime chance. It’s no wonder it was held so long by one family, and I can’t wait to see who takes over its next chapter.”
