The Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority (BGPA) are to support the establishment of a memorial to honour Australian servicemen and women who fought in the Korean War.

In a statement, the Authority’s Board of Management said the proposal from the Korean War Memorial Committee had support from several key stakeholders.

“The Korean War Memorial Committee has now begun fundraising for the memorial, with the design led by the BGPA in collaboration with the committee and other key stakeholders,” the Board said.

“A location for the memorial is yet to be confirmed.”

It said final approval from the Board would be dependent on the location and final design of the memorial.

Minister for the Environment, Stephen Dawson said Kings Park and Botanic Garden was a really special place for many Western Australians and he was happy that work was progressing to make the space even more inclusive.

“A memorial to commemorate and honour the servicemen and women who fought in the Korean War will have a lasting impact on the people, culture and history of Western Australia,” Mr Dawson said.

“While most Australians may not be as familiar with the Korean War as they are with either of the two World Wars, or the Vietnam War, those who served Australia in Korea did so with pride, courage and the best of the ANZAC tradition,” he said.
