The new inclusive Waitara Park playground has been declared a boost for people with disabilities in the surrounding communities.
The playground was recently upgraded with the help of $600,000 in public funding to make it accessible for people with disabilities or special needs.
Minister for Energy and Environment and MP for Hornsby, Matt Kean joined the Mayor of Hornsby, Philip Ruddock to launch the new playground upgrade.
“This is a real achievement for Hornsby Shire Council and the local community,” Mr Kean said.
“The upgrade means everyone – no matter how young or old, no matter their age, ability or cultural background – gets fair and equal access to this fantastic playspace,” he said.
“Open spaces are vital for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy their neighbourhood, helping them stay healthy and happy.”
He said the Everyone Can Play initiative would ultimately see $20 million delivered and matched dollar-for-dollar by Councils for great playspaces across the State.
Commissioner of Open Space and Parklands, Fiona Morrison, said more than 1.3 million people in NSW lived with a disability or added needs.
“It’s so important that we make our open spaces and playgrounds in parklands available to be enjoyed by every citizen regardless of their level of ability,” Ms Morrison said.
“We’ve developed the Everyone Can Play design guideline to help Councils and developers deliver open spaces people want and need – accessible to all and keep us connected,” she said.
