Transport Canberra is encouraging kids, families and carers to participate in this year’s National Walk Safely to School Day this Friday (14 May).

Transport Canberra said primary school kids, along with their parents and carers, had been participating in the Day for over 20 years.

“Walking or riding to school is a great way to add some exercise into your daily routine which means being healthier and happier, making it much easier to pay attention during the day,” Transport Canberra said.

“It also helps with reducing congestion and improves safety around the schools,” it said.

“Plus it is one of the most sustainable forms of transport!”

Transport Canberra said part-way points were a good alternative for those who couldn’t practically ride or walk the whole way to school.

The Agency said it had handy tools to help people participate in the Day on its Active Streets for Schools webpage.

“The Active Streets for Schools program is an extension of the Ride or Walk to School program to make the environment around schools safer to ride, walk, scooter or skate to and from school,” it said.

Transport Canberra said its Program also provided maps for primary schools in Canberra to make it easier and safer for children to ride or walk to school.
