The Territory has released the first round of free training places for 2022, offering all Canberrans the opportunity to learn new skills to boost their careers or transition to a new one.

Announced by Minister for Skills, Chris Steel, thousands of training places have been made available under an expansion of the JobTrainer program with the Australian Government.

“Skilled workers are a key part of our COVID-19 recovery,” Mr Steel said.

“These free training places will support local businesses to find the skilled workers they need and give Canberrans the opportunity to skill-up in areas where there are jobs at the other end,” he said.

“The expansion of JobTrainer will deliver up to 2,500 free training places over the next 18 months, with Canberrans of all ages and employment status eligible to access free training places in four priority skills shortage areas.”

Mr Steel said this round of JobTrainer was open to all Canberrans who wanted to take up free training in aged care, digital skills, early childhood education and care and disability care.

The Minister said the free courses available included Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care; Certificate III in Individual Support; Certificate IV in Mental Health; Certificate IV in Ageing Support; and Certificate IV in Cyber Security.

“Young people aged 17 to 24 and Canberrans who are currently unemployed can also access a wider range of full qualifications, short courses and work-readiness programs,” he said.

“Places in courses in hospitality, construction, retail and other skills are planned to be released in early 2022; sectors identified by the ACT Job Trainer Industry Advisory Group with a skills shortage,” he said.
