Free training for infection skills

Skills Canberra has released 3,800 fully funded, fee-free training places to support the accelerated uptake of accredited infection control and food handling training in response to COVID-19.

The training places are being paid for via the National Infection Control Training Fund, a joint Territory, State and Commonwealth Government initiative.

Skills Canberra said the training places were available for customer-facing employees in any industry.

It said funding had been prioritised for workers in retail; tourism; transport and logistics; hospitality; cleaning; and security services industries.

It said priority had also been given to increase infection control skill levels in sectors such as aged and disability care.

The Federal Department of Education, Skills and Employment said the four infection control skill sets offered nationally recognised training to frontline workers.

“These industries will be at the frontline of the first wave of businesses reopening in Australia,” the Department said.

“It is critical that individuals and businesses in these industries are able to demonstrate that they can operate in a way that minimises the risk of community and workplace transmission,” it said.

The Department said workers would learn hand hygiene practices; effective surface cleaning; use of personal protective equipment; disposal of contaminated waste; hazard identification, control and reporting; appropriate protocols and responses in the event of an incident; and knowledge regarding the basis of infection and transmission.
