The planting of Floriade’s one million blooms is underway in Commonwealth Park as the city prepares to welcome back Australia’s biggest celebration of Spring.
Minister for Tourism, Andrew Barr said the Future of Flowers was the theme for this year’s event, which is to run from 11 September to 10 October.
“This year, for the first time in its 34-year history, Floriade will be on display both in Commonwealth Park and throughout the Canberra community,” Mr Barr said.
“In 2021 Floriade Community will extend the Floriade footprint across Canberra by distributing 300,000 bulbs and annuals to 94 schools, community groups and organisations who will spread Floriade across the Territory,” he said.
“Successful applicants for Floriade Community are receiving their bulbs and annuals this week.”
Mr Barr said Floriade NightFest would also return for four nights from 30 September to 3 October, with live entertainment to be announced in the coming months.
The Chief Minister said Floriade was one of the premier attractions for the ACT and the return of crowds to Commonwealth Park should be a significant boost to the local tourism sector.
He said that in 2019, Floriade attracted a record 507,550 attendees and had an economic impact of $44.7 million, with 49.4 per cent of visitors attending the event from interstate or overseas.
