Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags are now flying at the ACT Policing Headquarters in Belconnen.
The decision to add them to the building was made after Ngunnawal Elder, Auntie Violet Sheridan noted their absence at ACT Policing stations.
Auntie Violet is a member of the Chief Police Officer’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Board.
Two new flag poles were installed in front of the Police HQ for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags which joined the National, ACT and AFP flags.
ACT Chief Police Officer, Justine Saunders hosted a flag raising ceremony with Auntie Violet and other representatives of Canberra’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community including the United Ngunnawal Elders Council and ACT Elected Body.
Assistant Commissioner Saunders said the symbolism of raising the flags was important for developing a mutually respectful and trusting relationship with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of the ACT.
“ACT Policing can only serve and keep our community safe if we have a strong relationship with the community — everyone in our community,” Assistant Commissioner Saunders said.
“These flags will remind us of where we need to go and what we need to do to change and improve our community relationships.”
