Selgar Avenue link road has been completed for $2.8 million as the first part of the River Torrens to Darlington works, a joint project between the South Australian and Federal governments.
Motorists now have another entry point into the Tonsley area from South Road aside from the existing Tonsley Boulevard intersection, providing improved access between the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) motorway and the Clovelly Park area.
The $15.4 billion T2D Project is being funded on a 50:50 basis by the state and Commonwealth to complete the non-stop, 78-kilometre north-south corridor between Gawler and Old Noarlunga. It will be a 10.5 km motorway providing a nine-minute journey for vehicles travelling between West Hindmarsh and Darlington.
Local civil engineering company Bardavcol built the road, and the state’s Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Tom Koutsantonis was excited to announce its completion as part of the $850m broader network upgrades package.
“This is the first taste of the improved road network connectivity being delivered as part of the biggest infrastructure project in South Australian history,” he said.
Mr Koutsantonis said the package was delivering additional network and amenity upgrades along and around the 10.5 km T2D Project so that the motorway and wider road network remained in operation throughout construction.
Federal Member for Boothby Louise Milller-Frost said she was pleased to be partnering with the State Government on enhancing the links to southern Adelaide, but “the major works are still ahead of us”.
Already underway is the nearby Tonsley East Substation, expected to supply electricity to the tunnel-boring machines and two parallel four-kilometre-long southern tunnels upon their completion in 2030.
The substation is on the site of the former Mitsubishi building in South Road and is being built by SA Power Networks and its subsidiary Enerven as part of the project’s Southern Laydown Area.
