The Department for Health and Wellbeing has issued a warning not to eat certain charcuterie from Barossa Fine Foods following a recall for possible contamination.

Acting Director of Food and Controlled Drugs Branch at the Department, Joanne Cammans said Listeria had been detected in four products made by Barossa Fine Foods during routine testing.

“The products were recalled on the weekend (9-10 October) as a precautionary measure when presumptive results were received on Friday 8 October,” Ms Cammans said.

“While we have not received notification of anyone contracting Listeria from any of these products, the infection can be extremely serious if it is contracted by the elderly, pregnant women or people with weakened immune systems,” she said.

Products included in the recall from Barossa Fine Foods include: Farmhouse Pâté 110g UBD 20 November 2021; Duck & Walnut Pâté 110g UBD 20 November 2021; Duck Terrine Pâté 110g UBD 20 November 2021; and Truffle Pâté 110g UBD 20 November 2021.

Ms Cammans said Listeria infection started with flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle aches, nausea, and sometimes diarrhoea.

She said people could start experiencing symptoms within a few days, but symptoms could take up to six weeks to appear after eating contaminated product.

The Acting Director said those most at-risk included pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborn babies, the elderly, people of all ages with immune systems weakened by disease or illness and anyone on medication that could suppress the immune system.

She said if symptoms developed, people were advised to see their GP as soon as possible.

“As a precaution, we recommend anyone who has purchased these products from Foodland or another independent grocery to not eat it, and either return it to the place of purchase or discard it,” Ms Cammans said.
