The Department of Finance has launched its 2021 Career Starter Program to recruit recently graduated Year 12 students as potential employees in a range of Departments and Agencies across the Australian Public Service.

In a statement, Finance said the entry-level program, which it coordinated, allowed participants to build skills on the job, learn through structured training and work as part of a team.

“As a Career Starter, you will have a full-time permanent job with a competitive starting salary in the Australian Public Service (APS),” the Department said.

“To be eligible, you must have completed your Year 12 Certificate in 2019 or be completing it in 2020; you must be an Australian citizen or going to be granted Australian citizenship by November 2020.”

It said applicants should also be able to obtain and maintain a baseline security clearance.

Finance said successful applicants would study for a Certificate IV in Government with training modules including transition into corporate life; writing skills for the APS; application and interview skills; essentials of project management and policy development.

“You will receive lots of support throughout the program from supervisors, colleagues, the HR team and a ‘buddy’, from a previous year’s program or similar,” it said.

Finance said it would be hosting a Virtual Candidate Information Session on 6 August between noon and 1pm via GovTEAMS for participants to learn more about the recruitment process, the Career Starter Program, hear from current career starters and to ask questions.
