Canberrans are to help guide the management of the ACT’s urban open spaces with City Services calling for feedback on a draft plan.
Launching the draft Urban Space Land Management Plan, City Services said the draft plan built upon the previous land management plans with an increased focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and culture; community participation and engagement; environmental, cultural, social and economic sustainability; addressing the impacts of urban development; and climate change.
“The ACT Government is responsible for managing and maintaining over 6,800 hectares of public urban open space and adjoining facilities,” the Directorate said.
“Our urban open spaces include town, district and neighbourhood parks, sportsgrounds and dryland ovals, pedestrian parklands, semi-natural urban open spaces, landscaped areas around shopping centres, and public cemeteries,” it said.
“As we continue to invest in new and improved open spaces, we need to ensure our existing urban open space network caters to the recreational needs of our diverse community and provides a much‑needed break from our built environment.
“We also know as our population continues to grow, there will be increased demand for high quality public spaces that are accessible, safe and meet the community’s changing needs.”
City Services said feedback would be open until 15 August to help refine the draft plan and ensure the final plan reflected the needs of the community.
