A new ticketing system is to be designed to provide Canberra’s public transport users with convenient and flexible payment methods and real-time travel information.
The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate said the new system would provide users of buses and light rail with advanced ticketing technology.
“(The new system is) aimed at making it easy to plan, pay for and take public transport, bringing us up to speed with major cities around the world,” the Directorate said.
“The new system will provide flexible payment options to allow you to choose how to pay your fares whether by card, phone or another smart device,” it said.
“People currently need to purchase and top up a MyWay card and, while a similar travel card may still be an option, the range of payment methods will mean a more user-friendly travel experience.”
The Directorate said the new ticketing system would improve real-time travel updates in response to community feedback that the current real-time information was slow and unreliable.
It said expressions of interest were being sought from suppliers who could meet customers’ needs by creating systems that enabled multiple payment options and provided flexibility for customers to manage their account.
The Directorate said the new ticketing system was expected to be available on board buses and light rail from 2023.
