The Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate is to eradicate feral carp and other pest fish from Fadden Pond in Tuggeranong.
The Directorate said Fadden Pond was a highly valued community asset that had recently been renovated and with carp eradication the water would become much clearer and the Pond would be a better recreational facility with a wider range of wildlife.
“Fadden Pond is the last remaining source of pest fish that may travel from the pond, down the stormwater system to reinfest Isabella Pond, which will be free of carp following significant infrastructure works currently under way,” the Directorate said.
“A greater variety of aquatic life will potentially thrive in the pond without the carp, particularly water plants and native species.”
It said the carp would be removed using a plant-based treatment that was safe for the community, the resident duck population and other animals, including tortoises and dogs.
However, there would be no access to the pond for 48 hours during and after the eradication process when the dead fish would be removed.
“Weather conditions need to be right, but it is expected the treatment will take place in late autumn or spring,” the Directorate said.
“The treatment will not happen if it is raining because the pond needs to be at a lower level for best results. Rain may also cause the pond to overflow.”
It said signs would be erected at the Pond before the treatment advising the day and any safety precautions.”
An information session is to be held at the Pond from 10am to 1pm this Saturday (5 May).
