A major boost for the professional development, mentoring and coaching of Canberra’s school teachers has been announced by the Minister for Education and Early Childhood Development, Yvette Berry.

Ms Berry said the new $5.4 million project was aimed at increasing the powers of school teachers, leaders and other professionals in the ACT Education system and was part of the Education Directorate’s Future of Education Strategy.

She said the Empowered Learning Professionals Leadership Plan would support teachers by employing four skilled teachers with expertise in pedagogy, learning difficulties and literacy and numeracy programming, to implement a coaching and mentoring model to help build teaching capacity.

She said there would be more opportunities and time for collaboration; training for leadership staff in data literacy skills; funding to engage leading national and international education researchers to work alongside school leaders; and training programs to support principal health and wellbeing.

“This approach is based on the strong evidence and research of leading education systems, and improved outcomes through instructional leadership and enabling innovative approaches to learning and teaching,” Ms Berry said.

She said the plan was further enhanced by the $4.5 million Affiliated Schools partnership with the University of Canberra.

She said the employment of the senior teachers to implement the coaching and mentoring model was an election commitment.
