EVs charging as State leads the nation

South Australia is set to be home to the country’s first-ever Statewide rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging network.

Announcing the plan, Premier Steven Marshall said the network would comprise 536 fast and rapid charging points across 140 EV charging sites in 52 rural, regional and metropolitan service locations.

Mr Marshall said the network, part of the Government’s Electric Vehicle Action Plan, would give EV motorists the confidence to travel further by eliminating range anxiety.

“EVs will be able to travel from Bordertown to Border Village and everywhere in between,” he said.

“This plan will make electric vehicles the first choice for someone buying a new car by 2030 with the environmental and economic benefits that brings to South Australia.”

Deputy Premier, Dan van Holst Pellekaan said more than 140 site hosts were expected to participate in the network.

“Our State’s abundant wind and solar resources will be harnessed to power a reliable network of charging stations that will accelerate EV uptake and help achieve our target of net-100 per cent renewables by 2030,” Mr van Holst Pellekaan said.

Mr van Holst Pellekaan said the Electric Vehicle Action Plan also offered 7,000 motorists a $3,000 subsidy and three-year registration holiday when they bought a new EV, with a further $2,000 available to 7,500 households, with new or existing plug-in EVs, that invested in smart-charging solutions in their homes.

He said the Royal Automobile Association (RAA) would construct and operate the Statewide EV charging network, with work expected to start mid-2022.
