The ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) has urged residents across the Territory to prepare for the bushfire season which is now officially open.

ESA said on its website that this year’s bushfire season was expected to be longer and more dangerous on average as the effects of climate change are felt.

“The ACT has just experienced the driest winter since 1982,” ESA said.

“The risk is real.”

It said it was time to work as a team and prepare for the season ahead.

The ESA urged all residents to get to know the signs, to know where to find information and to “know the plan”.

“You can complete your own Bushfire Survival Plan in four easy steps,” ESA said.

“Discuss with your family on what you will do if a bushfire threatens your home.

“Will you leave early or are you preparing to stay?”

ESA said residents should prepare their homes now by clearing gutters and trimming overhanging trees.

It said bushfire alert levels are displayed on all major arterial roads across the Territory and are available on the ESA website.
