A Parliamentary Committee has launched an inquiry into the operations and future of the country’s national institutions in Canberra.
The Joint Standing Committee on the National Capital and External Territories is to inquire into and report on the range of innovative strategies that Canberra’s national institutions were using to maintain viability and relevance to sustainably grow their profile, visitor numbers, and revenue.
Chair of the Committee, Ben Morton MP said Canberra’s national institutions were a major drawcard for the capital, attracting local, interstate and overseas visitors.
“They contribute significantly to the local economy and Canberra’s culture,” Mr Morton said.
“In launching this inquiry, the Committee is keen to examine creative ways that national institutions engage with both visitors and the private sector.”
He said these included new forms of public engagement and audience participation, reaching out to the community beyond Canberra, and creating a strong online presence.
Mr Morton said other areas to be explored in the terms of reference would be the development of other income streams, ensuring the appropriateness of governance structures, and the possibility of other new institutions being established.
The Committee will accept written submissions, addressing one or more of the terms of reference, until 8 May.
