Newly purchased zero emissions vehicles (ZEVs) are to receive two years of free registration in the ACT.
Minister for Climate Action, Andrew Barr said eligible ACT residents and businesses could now apply for the two years of free registration for ZEVs purchased or acquired until 30 June 2024.
“The ACT has an ambitious target of net zero emissions by 2045,” Mr Barr said.
“Transport emissions now account for around 60 per cent of the ACT’s greenhouse gas emissions and of these emissions an estimated 70 per cent are from private vehicles,” he said.
“Reducing the number of high emitting vehicles on our roads is significant to achieving our targets along with encouraging active travel and public transport use.”
Mr Barr said reducing transport emissions was an essential step to achieving a sustainable, resilient future and to reaching the ACT’s net zero emissions goal by 2045.
He said the Territory was fast approaching 1,000 registered electric vehicles and further incentives, such as the two-year registration waiver and no-interest loans through the Sustainable Household Scheme, would make purchasing ZEV’s a viable option for Canberrans.
“We are also working closely with industry to make zero emissions vehicles more affordable and available and planning more charging stations across the Territory in the future to ensure the ACT will continue to be leaders in the transition to zero emissions transport,” he said.
