Perth’s first electric Central Area Transit (CAT) buses are expected to begin serving the Perth suburb of Joondalup in January of next year.

The first of four electric buses ordered by the Government has been constructed, with the second one currently being built.

When finished, the two buses will begin on-road testing by October, in anticipation of the trial beginning in January.

Minister for Transport, Rita Saffioti said that in addition to the Joondalup CAT network, it was expected the buses would also service some northern suburban routes.

“Modifications to the Joondalup bus depot, which include changes to the parking layout, maintenance facility and high-voltage EV charging system installation, are about 75 per cent complete,” Ms Saffioti said.

“Four trial vehicles will be supplied to the Public Transport Authority by Volvo through their existing bus supply agreement.”

She said that while the manufacture of the first two buses was being undertaken in Melbourne, she expected Volvo’s partnership with local manufacturer, Volgren, would allow for future electric buses to be fitted out locally.

“This is an exciting initiative for Western Australia,” Ms Saffioti said.

“It is about supporting our public transport, cleaner transport and ensuring we partner with industry for the best employment outcomes.”

She said it was part of the Government’s vision of not only supporting cleaner transport, but also local manufacturing.
