Canberrans could find themselves voting in a different electorate at the next election, with the ACT Redistribution Committee proposing a shift in electoral boundaries.
ACT Electoral Commissioner, Damian Cantwell said the Committee had not proposed any change to the names of the electorates, with the Territory to continue to be divided into electorates named Brindabella, Ginninderra, Kurrajong, Murrumbidgee and Yerrabi.
“One key requirement for an ACT redistribution is ensuring that electoral enrolment in each electorate will be within five per cent of the quota at the time of the next election,” Mr Cantwell said.
“This requirement is aimed at ensuring ‘one vote, one value’,” he said.
“The quota is one fifth of the ACT total enrolment.”
Mr Cantwell said each of the proposed electorates met this requirement.
He said the changes would see the whole of Kambah added to the Brindabella electorate (instead of split with Murrumbidgee), while Yarralumla, Deakin, Forrest and Red Hill would be added to the Murrumbidgee electorate.
“The report of the Redistribution Committee includes a map of the proposed boundaries, a statement of reasons for the proposed names and boundaries of the five electorates, and detailed statistics,” the Electoral Commissioner said.
“Members of the public are invited to make written objections to the proposal to the Augmented ACT Electoral Commission,” he said.
“Objections must be lodged with the Augmented Electoral Commission by Friday, 9 June 2023.”
