The Department of Education has launched a campaign and new resources to help parents and carers inspire their children’s love of mathematics.
Minister for Education, Sarah Mitchell said the Department’s #MathsTrainsBrains campaign encouraged students, parents and carers to embrace mathematics and aimed to change attitudes toward the subject.
Ms Mitchell said the campaign was part of the broader NSW Mathematics Strategy, launched in October.
“Today we are encouraging our parents and students to embrace mathematics at school to build solid foundations for life,” Ms Mitchell said.
“Mathematics is everywhere and mastering it will help our students succeed in anything they choose to do,” she said.
“For parents, maths homework can be confronting,” she said.
“This campaign is asking parents and carers to be positive and involved in their child’s mathematics education.”
Ms Mitchell said that in a NSW-first the campaign featured a resource hub, Everyday Maths, to help parents and carers get involved in their children’s mathematics learning, and support them to feel confident to talk with their child about mathematics.
The Minister said that as part of the NSW Curriculum Reform, the Department would work with the NSW Education Standards Authority and Skills and Higher Education to design and develop mathematics courses for students in Kindergarten through to Year 12.
